In a criminal case you get appointed counsel, a jury, an open courtroom, and a record anyone can read. In a proceeding that can permanently sever your relationship with your own child, you may get none of those things.
Hearings happen quickly and often behind closed doors. Records are sealed. There is frequently no right to appointed counsel, so a parent without money argues against a state agency with a full legal department and an expert on retainer. Decisions made in an afternoon take years to undo, if they can be undone at all.
The pattern is the one this Foundation was built on: an ordinary family against the full weight of the state, with nobody standing beside them. Bring My Baby Home exists to be the somebody.
None of these are open yet. We are publishing them now so that the people who need them can tell us we got it wrong before we build the thing.
